Manage the education of horses

This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to manage the education of horses so they can adapt to a range of program environments and handling situations. It focuses on planning, monitoring and designing education programs for individual horses to suit riding program needs and client safety.

Application

This unit applies to those working as horse riding guides or instructors who are also responsible for the training and wellbeing of horses. This may include those working for private horse riding companies or group leaders in school outdoor education programs.

Elements and Performance Criteria

ELEMENT

PERFORMANCE CRITERIA

Elements describe the essential outcomes of a unit of competency.

Performance criteria describe the performance needed to demonstrate achievement of the element. Where bold italicised text is used, further information is detailed in the required skills and knowledge section and the range statement. Assessment of performance is to be consistent with the Evidence Guide.

Evidence Required

The evidence guide provides advice on assessment and must be read in conjunction with the performance criteria, required skills and knowledge, range statement and the Assessment Guidelines for the Training Package.

Overview of assessment

Critical aspects for assessment and evidence required to demonstrate competency in this unit

Evidence of the following is essential:

applies knowledge of horse handling and behaviour to train horses using appropriate techniques

monitors horse's progress and performance to ensure horse's health and welfare, makes appropriate adjustments to the training program and provides feedback to appropriate personnel

applies effective contingency management techniques to ensure horse's health and welfare at all times.

Context of and specific resources for assessment

Assessment must ensure assessment of training needs of multiple horses to design and monitor education programs of sufficient duration and breadth to demonstrate competency and consistency of performance.

Assessment must also ensure access to:

a horse riding establishment

horses of varying physical conditions operating in a variety of roles and at various stages of training

appropriate equipment and resources to implement the education program

Method of assessment

A range of assessment methods should be used to assess practical skills and knowledge. The following examples are appropriate for this unit:

observation of assessment of horse's education needs and application of planning processes to develop an appropriate education program

oral and or written questioning to assess knowledge of behaviour of horses and the effects of training

portfolio of training plans and progress records for horses

third-party reports from a supervisor detailing performance.

Holistic assessment with other units relevant to the industry sector, workplace and job role is recommended.
